
The Chief Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) serves as a key member of the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) executive leadership team. Embedded within OCIO, the Chief AI Officer leads the Department’s enterprise-wide strategy for the responsible adoption, governance, and oversight of AI technologies.
This role ensures alignment with federal policies, drives innovation, and safeguards ethical AI use to enhance mission outcomes across HHS. By collaborating closely with stakeholders across the Department and federal government, the Chief AI Officer plays a critical role in positioning HHS at the forefront of trustworthy and effective AI integration.
AI Use Case
OCIO is responsible for leading the annual HHS AI use case inventory. The artificial intelligence (AI) use case publication requirement was initiated consistent with Executive Order 13960 ”Promoting the Use of Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence in the Federal Government” and may be further enhanced by Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memoranda.
